What do you need to make your own website?
This post is for anyone looking to start a business, running a business, freelancing or just trying it out. I’m going to show you what you need to do to make your own website.
A domain name
A domain name is your ‘virtual address’ on the internet and you need one to serve as your websites internet home. Think of some name which is suitable for your need like company name / the service name / your name etc. Our domain name for example is – haveyourwebsite.com
- How do I have the domain? : There are a lot of domain providers like for example godaddy.com, namecheap.com etc. They provide the domain for you.
A hosting
After you’ve purchased a domain, you need to connect it to a hosting plan.
If your domain is your ‘virtual address’ on the internet, then hosting is your ‘website storage unit’.
This hosting plan stores the files and data which are required for the website. This files and data can be shown to the world whenever a visitor visits your website. This also provides you with tools for managing the back end of your website.
- Where can I get the hosting plan? : Again, there are number of hosting providers available on the website. You can choose any hosting provider like siteground.com, hostgator.com etc. They give you lot of packages choose from. You can choose based on your requirement and size of your business.
Tool to create website
Once you have a domain and hosting, you need to decide on the content management system for your website. Content management system is a tool with which you can create your own website. Here is some of the CMS software you can use: WordPress, Joomla & Drupal.
I would prefer WordPress over others. As WordPress is very easy to use, more reliable and easily scalable. You can go to wordpress.org to know more about it. They give tutorials with which you can learn quicker.
Patience
Rome wasn’t built in a day. Neither was a great website.
Don’t lose patience if you can’t immediately master. It takes time.
If you can improve your skills and website incrementally every single day 1%, within 100 days your website will be twice as good as when you started.
There’s a ton of great, free content out there to help you along the way.
Our website has gone through at least 5 different variations, before we settled on a style and layout we liked. And it continues to evolve and improve every day.
